God's World

world, I cannot hold thee close enough!

Thy winds, thy wide grey skies!

Thy mists, that roll and rise!
Thy woods, this autumn day, that ache and

sag
And all but cry with color! That gaunt crag
To crush! To lift the lean of that black bluff!
World, World, I cannot get thee close enough!

Long have I known a glory in it all,

But never knew I this:

Here such a passion is
As stretcheth me apart, — Lord, I do fear
Thou' st made the world too beautiful this

year;
My soid is all but out of me, — let fall
No burning leaf; prithee, let no bird calL

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

September 11 marks the 50rh anniversary of the Blue
Ridge Parkway, a modern wilderness road covering 470
miles across the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The
Parkway stretches through Virginia into North Carolina,
and ends at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains.

The idea for the Parkway was implemented by
Harold Ickes, Secretary of the Interior. The main
objective was to preserve the raw beauty of the
mountains with roads of horizons chat ran parallel to
the range.

The project began in 1935. The first 12 miles starred
at the Lowgap-Sparta Road near Cumberland Knob.
Many of the men who began the project Came from the
unemployment lines of Alleghany County, Almost 90%
of the labor force was comprised of mountain men
from that area.

Construction on the Parkway was slowed by World
War DL Later, disputes with the Cherokee Nation caused
the original route to be moved to the northwest edge of
Cherokee and ended at the foot of the Smokies. The
section of Parkway near Asheville was not completed
until the 196G's. The final section concent rares on the
Grandfather Mountain area and includes the Linn Cove
Viaduct. This 1,24 J ft. S-shaped, precast, segmental
bridge is the first of its kind in the United States. The
target date for completion is 1987.

In 1984 alone, over 19 million visitors enjoyed the
beautiful unit of the National Park System. Camping.
hiking and picnicking arc only a few activities available.

Doughton Park is known for excellent camping and
hiking trails. Grandfather Mountain offers everything a
vacationist could ask for. There, as well as in many
areas around Fancy Gap and U.S. 52, one will also find
crafts of every description that thrive to keep the
heritage of the mountain people alive.

SiA A SUMMER NOON

Who has not dreamed a world of bliss

On a bright sunny noon like this.
Couched by his native brook's green
With comrade of his boyish days,
While all around them seemed to be
Just as in joyous infancy?
Who has not loved, at such an hour.
Upon that heath, in birchen hewer.
Lulled in the po-et's dreamy mood,
Irs wild and sunny solitude ;•
While o'er the waste of purple ling
You mark a sultry glimmering;
Silence herself there seems to sleep.
Wrapped in a slumber long and deep,
here slowly stray those lonely sheep

hrough the tall foxglove's crimson bloom
And gleaming of the Scattered broom.
Love you not, then, to list and hear
The crackling of the gorse- flowers near
Pouring an orange-scented tide
Of fragrance o'er the desert wild?
To hear the buzzard's whimpering shrill,
Hovering about you high and Still r 1
The twittering of the bird that dwells
Among the heath's delicious bells?
While round your bed, o'er fern and blade.
Insvtts in green and gold arrayed.
The sun's gay tribes have lightly strayed;
And sweeter sound their humming wings

"han the proud minstrel's echoing strings.

BILL MANSFIELD

VISITING ARTIST

Bill Mansfield, 1983 Visiting Artist from the North
Carolina Department of Community Colleges,, is a
home-grown Carolinian from Raleigh who plays tradi-
tional ole time mountain music, combined with coastal
folk music to achieve a sound that has echoed through
North Carolina for years.

Coming from a family containing several "ole din-
ers," and inspired by his mother, Bill Mansfield began
playing the jaw harp at age twelve. He then began
playing the harmonica, looking for more sound for his
music. In high school, he formed a string band and
became interested in playing the banjo.

In 1979, Mansfield, was awarded a grant from the
National Endowment for the Arts. The grant permitted
him to study for six months under folk musician Fred
Cockerham of Belews Creek, NC Bill Mansfield
speaks highly of internationally known Cockerham.
"He taught me the emotion that accompanies the ole
time style." said Bill Mansfield.

By the fall of 1980, Mansfield entered the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a mas-
ter's degree in folklore. During the summer months, he
worked as a ranger at Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Here, Mansfield helped to organize the Outer Banks
Folk Festival that consists primarily of musicians of the
traditional ole time sound.

From the coastal region of the state, Mansfield
learned the songs of the ole timers of that area and
plays many of the tunes in het performances. He has
even adopted Scottish bag-pipe tunes brought over by
early settlers and plays these songs on the banjo.

In 1982, he was accepted in the North Carolina
Visiting Artists Program. The program is a four-year
adventure that has carried Mansfield throughout the
state giving him an opportunity to share the music
taught to him by so many.

June will end his tour as visiting artist and Mansfield
feels that Surry County is the ideal location for his
finale. He wants to "stroke the fires already burning
here." He hopes "to expose and attract the younger
generation," and "bring back the ole time sound" that
was bom here in the foothills and in the Blue Ridge
Mountains. To do this would be to "pass my final
exam," stated Bill Mansfield.

As for long-term goals, the Visiting Artist wants to
improve and expand his already impressive talent. Bill
would like to see a revival of the ole time sound
throughout the country. To "return to the basics" is
Mansfield's vision for the country music industry.
"Many people think that artists play the craw-hammer
style or ole rime sound because they can't play anything
else. I don't think that's true. I consider it a challenge to
be able to play within the limitations of the ole time
style."
